Kansas, 1905. Il giovane
ed eccentrico Oscar Diggs lavora come illusionista di un piccolo circo con il nome de "Il grande e potente Oz". Egli
è inoltre un seduttore che invaghisce le donne donando loro un piccolo carillon, che a sue drammatiche parole era
appartenuto alla sua nonna defunta (anche se in realtà egli ne possiede molte copie). Un brutto giorno, dopo aver
fatto infuriare il pubblico di un suo spettacolo per essersi rivelato incapace di guarire una bambina disabile, Oscar
riceve una visita da parte di Annie, una sua amica di cui è innamorato, la quale lo informa che un certo John Gale le
ha chiesto la mano

 

Oscar Diggs (James
Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz.
At first he thinks he's hit the jackpot-fame and fortune are his for the taking. That all changes, however, when he
meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz), and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not
convinced he is the great wizard everyone's been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of
Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts
